Final Exam – POLS 216

Summer 2007

Your final exam assignment is below.  Please remember a few things:  1) provide examples where possible; 2) be explicit about the theoretical vantage point you use to argue your point(s); and 3) support your argument with evidence (data, examples, specific instances that illustrate your conceptual ideas, etc.).

In addition, you are allowed to bring in one page of outlined notes for use during the exam period. The “regulations” are as followed. They will be strictly enforced.

Identify and discuss what you think are the two most challenging political-economic problems for the world community today.  How do the two problems impact EDCs and LDCs differently (or similarly)?  Explain.  It is up to you to discuss and to argue effectively why you think each problem is important.  Be specific and develop your ideas.  You should base part of your discussion on what you found in IFS, but you can also bring in discussion from lectures and readings throughout the course.  You may also wish to investigate other parts of IFS to understand world problems and potential solutions.  Lastly, is there any hope in solving these types of difficult IPE problems?  If so, why do you think that and what can be done to solve the problems?  If you think there is little or no hope, then what if anything do you think should be done?

Remember:  The best answers will be able to integrate material from the first part of the course (including the theoretical perspectives from earlier parts of the course) with the ideas, problems and trends you investigated in IFS and the new concepts we discussed (e.g., modernism/traditionalism, political ecology) in the second half of the class.
