Homer's Home Delivery

The UConn Document Delivery / Interlibrary Loan (DD/ILL) office provides the mailing of interlibrary loan materials directly to the homes of students, faculty and staff. This service is targeted primarily toward students who do not come to campus regularly, but it is not limited to just these students. This service does not include the delivery of photocopies.

1. Is Homer's Home Delivery available to any UConn student, staff or faculty member?

Yes. However, in most cases this is not the quickest method of delivery. If you are regularly on campus, the fastest way of receiving 'returnable' loans is to pick them up at the Babbidge Circulation Desk or at your Regional UConn Campus Library following your receipt of pickup notification.

Borrowers who will benefit from Homer's Home Delivery service the most are those who do not visit their home campus on a regular basis.

2. Who is responsible for lost materials?

Those patrons who select the "Home Delivery" option have the following responsibilities:

  • You are responsible for all items that the Library mails to you, even if you do not receive them. Books will be shipped via UPS (delivery in New England is usually overnight).
  • You are responsible for returning items on time. You can return your loan items in person to the Homer Babbidge Library or to your Regional Campus Library. You may also return loan items to the Homer Babbidge Library via UPS or U.S. Mail. If you choose to mail your items to the Homer Babbidge Library on the Storrs campus, mail them early to allow for delivery before the due date.
  • You are responsible for the return shipping charges, as well as the replacement costs for any item not received back at the UConn Libraries.
  • Books can be returned in person to the Homer Babbidge Library or your Regional Campus Library at any time either at the Circulation Desk or by using the outside book drop, if available.

3. Can I choose to have photocopies mailed to me?

No. Electronic Document Delivery is a much more efficient method for the delivery of photocopies.

4. Can all loan materials I request be mailed to me?

No. Library staff will use their judgment about the delivery options of some materials. Large or fragile items, items with loan periods of less than 2 weeks, videos, audio tapes and microforms will not be shipped.

5. What happens when Homer says a title can be found at my home campus library but I find that it is checked out or missing?

No problem! When you make your request for the missing title, just include a brief note in your request explaining that the title is checked out or missing. PLEASE NOTE: If a request is placed for a title that is available at your home campus library and is reported to be on the shelf, the request will be cancelled and you will be notified about the title's availability.

6. Why is there a special band around the front cover of each book I get through interlibrary loan?

This book band is placed around the front cover of each item for identification purposes. The band indicates to our staff that the title is not part of the UConn Libraries collection and belongs to another library. It is very important that it be left intact around the front cover at all times. Removal of the band may cause a delay in returning the title to the proper library, potentially resulting in a late return of the item and suspension of your document delivery/interlibrary loan privileges.

7. What do I need to do to start having my ILL materials shipped?

When placing a loan request, simply choose Home Delivery and provide us with a valid and complete mailing address in the Notes box at the bottom of the request form.

8. How will I know where to ship books when I am returning them?

Always return books to the Homer Babbidge Library. The address can found on the Document Delivery / Interlibrary Loan Homepage. We will include a return shipping label with each book. You are responsible for securely packing the item for return shipment and you will be charged for materials lost or damaged in transit.

Finally, remember that having ILL materials delivered to your home may not be your best choice. The amount of time you can use the book will be shorter because shipping time will reduce the actual loan period, and you must bear the burden of return shipping costs. But if you live at a distance and do not come to campus regularly this is a beneficial service.
