HOMER Subject Heading Searches (Dramatic Arts)

Subject headings are terms that describe the overall content of a book (or any library item). You can search these terms in HOMER. For example, if you need information about hats, use the subject heading "hats," but also try the related subject heading "headgear." Also look for books with the broader subject headings "costume" or "fashion" (they will probably discuss or illustrate hats).

HOMER Subject Searches

Here is a detailed guide about Dramatic Arts Subject Headings (PDF).
Use these HOMER searches to search by subject heading:

Option 1: Select the Subject Heading search.
Type one of the headings from table below or the PDF guide above.
Keep exact word order if the heading has more than one term.
Example: stage lighting (retrieves a well-organized list).

Option 2: Select the Keyword Boolean search.
Type keywords from the table below or PDF guide above.
Separate terms with the word "and."
Optional: type skey before your term. This means search for "subject keywords."
Example: stage and lighting (alternatively: skey stage and skey lighting)
Retrieves a list of items arranged in reverse chronological order.

Option 3: Select the Advanced search.
In Advanced search select "Subject" from the "search in" menu (not Subject Heading).
Type your term(s) in the boxes.

To identify other headings more specific to your topic, do Keyword searches on terms drawn from your readings. Displays the catalog record of an interesting item and look at the line that says Subject(s). Click on the terms listed there, or copy and paste them into a new Subject Heading search. You can also look at lists of headings and related terms in the Library of Congress Subject Headings ("the big red books"). These are kept at most library reference desks.
