Images in Journal Articles

Music/Drama Library > Drama Research Guide > Image Research > Images in Articles

There are thousands (millions) of journal and magazine articles on most conceivable topics (sciences, history, places, cultures, objects). Many of them contain photographs, illustrations, and art reproductions that enhance the text.

How to Find Images in Journal Articles

Step 1: Go to a library research database that contains citations to journal articles.

Example: Art Abstracts and Art Index Retrospective (1929-present; has citations to articles and art in art history publications)

Find Other Databases:
Databases Containing Images (includes selected historical full-text journal databases, with images)
Journals, Magazine, and Newspapers (scroll to bottom of page for basic undergraduate databases)
All Other Library Databases (any topics)

Step 2: Search on any topic as usual.

Example: in Art Abstracts and Art Index Retrospective, type furniture and early and american.

Step 3: Use search features that limit results to articles with illustrations.

Example: in the Art Index's Physical Description menu, select "Illustration" (or some other feature). If you see more than one place to do this, then do it in both places.

For artists, you could also select the “Artist” field to find citations of reproductions of works by that artist.
For articles about the artist and his/her work, search for the artist’s name in the "Subject" field.

Step 4: Find the article in print or electronic format.

If there is a link to the full-text article or image, click on it (links are not always reliable). Otherwise, do a Journal Title search in HOMER to see if UConn has the article in print or electronic format. Most journals are in the Babbidge Library, Level 3 (see library stacks guide), shelved alphabetically by title.

Art Indexes

Many art indexes provide citations to image reproductions in magazine and journal articles.
