Find Books About Your Artist

Music/Drama Library > Drama Research Guide > Image Research > Books on the Artist

Search HOMER (the library catalog) to find books about your artist. These will probably include reproductions of his or her art.

Method 1: do an Author search (type the artist's last name, followed by first name or initial). This finds books by the artist or books devoted to reproductions (the artist is considered to be an "author").

Method 2: do a Subject Heading search (type the artist's last name, followed by first name or initial, then browse the resulting list). This finds books about the artist. These books generally include reproductions.

Method 3: do a Keyword search (type the artist's name, with the word and inserted, e.g., gauguin and paul; you can also use the Limit menu to restrict your results to books only). This finds the artist as both an author and a subject.

Method 4: if you know the name of a museum or collection containing the artist's works (e.g., Metropolitan Museum of Art), try looking up a published exhibition or catalog of the museum in HOMER (try a Keyword or Author search). It may contain a reproduction of the work you seek.

If these strategies do not work, then try consulting an art index (this helps you identify reproductions in anthologies and collections).
