Rose and Sigmund Strochlitz Travel Grants

Introduction

The Archives & Special Collections of the University of Connecticut Libraries, housed in the Thomas J. Dodd Research Center, support the research of scholars throughout the United States and from abroad. The Rose and Sigmund Strochlitz Travel Grants are intended to encourage use of these unique collections and to provide partial support to outstanding scholars who must travel long distances to consult them. Grants are awarded on a rolling schedule to promising graduate students and to established scholars who plan to conduct research at the Dodd Research Center.

Awards

Awards up to $500 are made to graduate students and post-doctoral students; established scholars are eligible for awards of up to $1,500. Approximately $3,000 in grants are available each year.

Selection

Travel grants are awarded on a competitive basis to applicants who are selected by a committee composed of Dodd Research Center staff with consultation from University of Connecticut faculty. The committee attempts to approve awards in a number of subject fields reflecting the strengths of Archives & Special Collections: Alternative Press, American Literature, Business History, Connecticut History, Hispanic Culture & History, Human Rights, Labor History, Natural History, and Nursing History. Criteria for selection include the significance of the individual's research project, his or her scholarly research credentials and letters of support and an identified need to use the Dodd Research Center collections.

Travel Grant Recipient Responsibilities

Travel grants recipients agree to conduct their research at the Dodd Research Center as indicated in their proposal, agree to meet with University faculty and library staff to discuss their research and give a public lecture within their specified academic discipline.

Application Process

Awards are advertised electronically and in printed scholarly publications. Applicants should submit the following materials with their applications:

  • A summary description (no more than two pages) of their research project and the need to consult Dodd Research Center collections in connection with their research
  • A current resume
  • Two letters of support, from appropriate scholars, attesting to the value of the research

Applications are accepted throughout the year as long as funds are available.  Applicants will receive a notification if their proposal is accepted within one month of the receipt of their application.  Travel grants are paid when the researcher visits the Dodd Research Center and there is a minimum processing period of eight weeks from the time a grant is accepted.
