Item of the MonthIllustration by Cyndy Szekeres for the book Great-Grandmother Cat Tales, written by Jan Wahl, from the Cyndy Szekeres Papers in the Northeast Children's Literature Collection
One of our favorite author/illustrators in the Northeast Children’s Literature Collection is Cyndy Szekeres of Putney, Vermont. In 1954, Szekeres earned a certificate from the Pratt Institute in New York in the same class as Tomie dePaola. Ms. Szekeres has produced or collaborated on over 125 books in nine languages and is best known for her animal characters. Szekeres won the AIGA Award for her work on Moon Mouse in 1969. Currently living on a farm in Vermont, Ms. Szekeres created this illustration in 1976 for Great-Grandmother Cat Tales, written by Jan Wahl and published by Dell. The Cyndy Szekeres Papers consist mainly of correspondence, artwork, and publishing materials for over two dozen Szekeres titles ranging from 1961 to the 1980s with some pieces from later dates. The collection includes both preliminary and finished artwork, dummies, separations, and proofs, and typescripts for select titles.
